International trip report to Askim, Norway

In May, a team of 10 of us went to Norway for two weeks to work with a church in a small town called Askim (about 30 miles south of Oslo ). Most of us weren’t too sure what to expect before we left but it soon became evident that our main role whist we were there was to help the church build relationships with the surrounding community. I think the thing which really struck me the most was how relational the church was. There seemed to be a real sense of community and the relationships they had with people from outside the church meant that God was adding to their numbers through this.

A lot of what we did involved working in the schools and we spent a lot of time going into schools and giving English lessons. This was a very new experience for a lot of us but one which we all really enjoyed. We were also involved with “new generation” which is a new thing which started recently in Scandinavia where Christians in schools are uniting and taking responsibility for their schools as their mission field. We also got the chance to spend some time with the young people there and on the final Saturday we held a big event in a park in the centre of Askim, which involved free face painting, free food and some sports.

I think the main highlight for me was just the chance to spend time with other members of the DNA Team and we were able to form a lot of close friendships with the people from the church in Norway . Although there were a lot of challenges it was great to see the way God was speaking to and through the members of the team whilst we were there and a lot of us were being encouraged to step out and try things we wouldn’t normally have done.
