Developing my Spiritual Gifts
Our doctrine and theology govern our practice. This is never more true than when we come to the arena of spiritual gifts. Here’s a list of what I mean
- "Spiritual gifts are not for today". Result? No use (except accidentally!)
- "Spiritual gifts are rare today". Result? Little use (and even then, it’s a surprise!)
- "God usually gives you one spiritual gift". Result? Narrow ministry opportunity.
- "Spiritual gifts are those listed in 1Corinthians 12: 7-11" Result? We have made the passage prescriptive rather than descriptive. So we limit how God gifts.
Personally, I think there are lots more gifts mentioned in the New Testament than simply the Corinthian list (e.g., celibacy, martyrdom!). C. Peter Wagner’s book, ‘Spiritual Gifts can help your Church Grow’ can tell you more.
Now then, a few questions and (hopefully) a few answers………….
Why is it important to develop spiritual gifts?
- They make us more Christlike. This is particularly true of the 1Corinthians list where it’s clear that Jesus manifested at least 7, probably 8 of them.
- They will help us to reach communities with the gospel. Spiritual gifts are God’s toolbox for making us more effective evangelistically. This is the case with any gift you can name – think about it!
How do we develop in this area?
- You’ve got to really want them! (1Cor14:1)
- You’ve got to keep asking for them! (Matthew7:7-11)
- You’ve got to use them or lose them! Read the book of Acts again to see how the Christians manifested gifts left right and center for the Glory of God.
What safeguards should we have in mind?
- We need to ask for wisdom in how we operate in this area. It’s the first gift mentioned in the Corinthian list, and that’s for a reason! Also, see what James1:5 says.
- We need to ask the Lord to fill our hearts with love. This should always be a major motivation for ministry. We are not to use gifts to show off!
- We need to be accountable. This will give us security in stepping out and it will protect those whom we serve from any potential for spiritual abuse.
Where do we begin?
- Start by praying in tongues more. It will strengthen you and open you up for more from God. (1Cor14:4a)
