DNA - a year on

written by Jonny Spence

There are many gap year opportunities where you can develop and unearth your skill set, where you can gain greater biblical understanding. DNA does give you this, but what sets it apart, is the focus of the provision of a safe environment where your character can become refined into a greater likeness of what it should be, a reflection of the character of God. As I reflect on what God did in my life during DNA, I can safely say DNA does indeed do all the things mentioned!

I can think back to many times when God broke into my life in a new way, but a single moment encapsulated the whole year. It was when a hug communicated that my heavenly Dad loves me! It may seem an odd thing to say, but to really know it in my heart was a huge revelation. Instead of needing to achieve things to please Him, I suddenly got that being a son means I can serve from the security of unconditional love. To then have the opportunity to pass what I’ve learned onto others has been such a privilege in church as well as in work.

So much has changed as a result of this for the better. My relationships with others, including my wife are now not defined simply by the desire to be accepted; as I now really ‘get’ that I am already accepted by my Abba Father. I have become a lot more self aware, less defensive and considerably more sensitive to hearing His voice prophetically.

DNA was a hard year, lots of tough times where I found out that I had areas of my life that weren’t good. However God wants to us to uncover those areas so we can be fully restored and be able to take hold of our Godly inheritance. DNA has helped me so much in taking more of that and would recommend that whatever age you are to do DNA.
